Vox Papuli™ (VoxPap) Conversational Computing Software

A new technology area is emerging to address the limitations of voice recognition technologies, called “conversational computing”. Conversational computing allows the user to interact with the computer orally – the user speaks to the computer and the computer talks back. Psyche Systems has designed an application that it calls Vox Papuli (or VoxPap for short) specifically for GYN pap cases to take advantage of this technology's possibilities in the application of such scrupulous laboratory testing. VoxPap works with Psyche Systems' WindoPath ä anatomic pathology information system to allow cytotechnologists to interact with the computer through a series of voice commands to complete cytology cases.

With VoxPap, cytotechs to can make a voice record of their observations with the use of a lightweight, cordless headset or microphone. By allowing the tech to focus exclusively on the specimen, VoxPap eliminates the need to perform time-intensive reviews of the specimen and minimizes the potential for human error – in recording such things as endo-cervical components or losing one's place in the examination.

The computer, through use of a synthetic voice, verbally prompts the cytotech for patient identification and other demographic information associated with a particular specimen, and then prompts the cytotech for the adequacy and the diagnosis. The computer records the diagnosis and reads the data back for verification, prior to prompting the tech to “sign out” the completed case. VoxPap can also recognize and flag a case that requires review before allowing sign out.

The verbal commands recognized by the computer can be customized for a particular lab's use, employing condensed phrases or words to signify a certain action or result. For example, the command “Negative” may be set to mean “Negative for intraepithelial lesion or malignancy” in the record. This flexibility makes VoxPap easy-to-use in almost any laboratory setting to improve productivity and prevent costly errors.
